Many insurance policies currently do not cover acupuncture services, these include Medicare, Masshealth, Commonwealth Care and Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA. Our clinic has been working hard to help change this... but we need your help! There are two bills that need your support so that we can increase acupuncture coverage for those with health insurance.
Acupuncture has been supported by the National Institutes of Health since 1997 as a viable treatment method for a number of medical conditions. There is an increasing body of scientific research supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating a wide range of medical conditions such as nausea, carpal tunnel, tension headaches, migraines, osteoarthritis, chronic pain, post-stroke recovery, allergies, depression, infertility, fibromyalgia and much more. Acupuncture is able to do all this with little to no side effects and at relatively low cost. It is one of the fastest growing healthcare choices in the country and has a strong focus on prevention.
Your legislators need to know that you want your health insurance to cover acupuncture and that acupuncture has been effective for you! The following bills will not pass unless your legislators hear from you!
HR 646, The Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2009 would add acupuncture as a benefit covered under Medicare and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Additionally, if enacted, this bill would set a strong precedent for acupuncture to be included in the current private health insurance policies that currently do not cover acupuncture, such Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. HR 646 is still pending increased legislative support. The bill currently has 37 co-sponsors but is in need of an additional 40-50 co-sponsors in order to move forward in the legislative process. It is important to note that only 3 out of 10 U.S. Representatives from Massachusetts have co-sponsored this bill. At the time of this update, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas and Congressman Ed Markey are not co-sponsors of HR 646.
What You Can Do
Familiarize yourself with HR 646 by reading the bill and the Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act 2009 Fact Sheet. The author of the bill has written a plea to his congressional colleagues urging them to "bring the safe, proven benefits of acupuncture to our constituents in the Medicare and Federal Employee Health Benefit Plans (FEHB) by co-sponsoring HR 646." Then, we are urging you to:

House Docket Number 3992, An Act Providing for Medical Coverage for Acupuncture, would amend Chapter 175 of the Massachusetts General Laws to provide coverage of qualified acupuncturist services to all subscribers, groups and members that are insured under the state's universal health care system. This bill would give all residents equal financial access to acupuncture. Also because of our universal health care system, the federal government is looking towards Massachusetts as a model for US healthcare reform.
What You Can Do
Email or write a personalized note or letter to your Representative telling them about your positive experiences with acupuncture and why you support this bill.
If you have any questions, feel free to call our clinic at (978) 369-9400. We will keep you up to date as these bills progress.
